Grow Bozeman’s urban forest in your backyard!

Want some shade and a little more birdsong in your life? In 2026, Branch Out Bozeman is giving away free trees to folks living in select neighborhoods. Tree Voucher Process

Check out the map for eligible neighborhoods

Did you know that Bozeman’s lower-income neighborhoods often have far fewer trees? Funding for the voucher program is provided by the DNRC Community Urban Forest Grant to increase tree canopy in disadvantaged communities.

Redeem your tree voucher by filling out the form for a $100 credit towards approved trees and supplies at Cashman Nursery.

Fill out a short form to claim your voucher. Once you fill out the form, you will receive an email confirmation with detailed instructions.

Time to shop!

Head over to Cashman Nursery with your barcode. Vouchers may be used to purchase approved tree species and materials, while supplies last.

TIP: Bare-root trees are the best bang for your buck!

Plant your tree the right way for long-lasting shade and beauty.

Follow the How to Plant A Tree guide or watch this video to give your tree the best start.

Don’t forget to call 811 to locate underground utilities before you dig!

To grow big and tall, your tree needs plenty of water and mulch.

Follow our care tips in the How to Plant A Tree guide.

The more trees, the better.

Let your neighbors know about the voucher program by snapping a photo and tagging @gallatinwatershedcouncil and @citybzn using #BOBtree.

Put a “I planted a Tree with BOB” sign in your yard (provided by GWC). Let’s inspire more neighbors to join in!

Good work supporting your community and our shared ecosystem!

FAQs

What is Branch Out Bozeman?

1

Branch Out Bozeman is a partnership between the Gallatin Watershed Council and the City of Bozeman Forestry Division. Our goal is to grow Bozeman’s tree canopy, maximize its potential, and create tools to help the community plant trees in areas where they’re needed most.

Who is eligible to receive a voucher?

2

Eligible residents must live within the Climate and Economic Justice (CEJST) and Environmental Justice (EJ) Disadvantaged Communities within the City of Bozeman. The EPA originally determined these areas, which can be seen on this unofficial map. If you received a door hanger, you’re good to go!

I rent. Can I still redeem a voucher and plant a tree?

3

Please contact your property manager to get permission to plant a tree on the property before redeeming a voucher.

Why does the BOB voucher program target specific neighborhoods?

4

Trees in an urban landscape provide energy savings, stormwater capture and treatment, and many public health and social benefits such as clean air, shade, crime reduction, and stress relief. By issuing targeted tree vouchers to residents within identified areas, BOB will enhance Bozeman’s urban forest in all neighborhoods

Can I redeem multiple vouchers?

5

Each household may only redeem one voucher. Vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

What can I buy with my voucher?

6

You may purchase an approved species of tree along with supporting supplies. Branch Out Bozeman has created a list of approved supplies, which can be viewed here.

You must redeem the entire $100 voucher in one transaction. If your total is under $100, please purchase supporting supplies for the health of the tree. If you don’t use the full amount, the remainder will be sent back to the grant.

Can I use my voucher in multiple transactions, or do I have to use it all at once?
